Setting the Standard: The Real Purpose Behind the Painting Scope
The purpose of this method statement is to provide general guidelines for painting works, and to define the inspection activities. It covers the activities of painting works at all project sites.

4. Responsibilities
-
Project Manager / Project/Construction Manager: Responsible for overall implementation and monitoring of all the activities in the method of statement of Paintings.
-
Site Manager: Responsible for over-all direction, monitoring, coordination, and control of all the constructions activities related to the paintings.
-
Site Engineer/Supervisor: Directly involved in the planning and execution of the activities involved in the Paintings. Ensures work permits are in place prior to commence of works. Directly control and give instruction to the working personnel.

QA/QC Manager/Engineer: Responsible for monitoring the work is carried out as per the Company approved ITP. Ensures all materials to be used is approved by the COMPANY. Checks each and every activity before and after the completion of the work.

HSE Engineer/Supervisor: Responsible for ensuring work is carried out as per Safe Work Practices, start card and work permit has been prepared and issued. Conducts tool box talk and maintains safety check list prior to commence the activity.

6. Procedure

Safety and Health Requirements
-
All employees shall be provided with complete personal protective equipment s (PPE).
-
All employees shall attend tool box start card meeting to identity all hazards associated with this work.
-
All workers shall be provided with proper tools and equipment s to execute the work safely.
-
MSDS shall be made available at work location.
-
For working at height, fixed and movable scaffolding would be erected as per the area requirement. All scaffolding shall be inspected and approved prior to start of work.

The use of ladder shall be restricted.
General Painting Procedure & Material Checks
-
Mockup sample would be made for selection and approval of the COMPANY representative prior to the commencement of the work.

Check material and painting system is approved from the COMPANY.
-
Delivered paint shall be checked with the following points: Expiry date, original labeled container, Manufacturers name, type of paint brand name, color designation and instruction of mixing.

Material shall be stored in cool, well ventilated dry place, away from direct sun light.

Storage of paint material shall be strictly followed as per manufacturer recommendations.
Surface Preparation Checklist

-
Make sure block masonry works, plastering, Slab/wall/foundation pours and grout Etc. are properly cured as per manufacturer requirements prior to commencement of work.

Confirm the surfaces cleaned of all contaminants.
-
Confirm the surface imperfections, nail head protrusions are repaired.
-
Confirm unsound and friable concrete removed and repaired with a suitable concrete repair mortar as per Concrete Procedure – P-ALF-C-001.

Confirm surface irregularities and blow holes repaired with suitable repair mortar.
-
Confirm the surface is dry.
-
Confirm holes/voids are filled up prior to first coating.

Hardware material which are already fixed and not to be painted shall be removed, if removal not possible shall be covered/Protected.

Clean and concrete or cement plaster surfaces to be painted. Efflorescence, chalk, dust dirt, grease and oil shall be removed.
-
The surface of the area to be painted would be prepared by removing loose partials, flaws and any foreign material shall be removed by way of sanding.
Sealant Application

-
The joints shall be thoroughly cleaned to remove all traces of dust, oil, grease or any unsound or contaminated material that might affect subsequent adhesion bond between the sealant and substrate.

Then backing rod will be inserted into the joints up to the nominated sealant depth.

Sealant will then be inserted/pushed by hand tools or sealant gun.

Tooling of sealant will be carried out immediately after application.
Application of Paintings Checklist

-
Make sure block masonry works, plastering, Slab/wall/foundation pours and grout Etc. are properly cured as per manufacturer requirements prior to installation of finish.

All painting shall be thoroughly mechanically stirred to a uniform consistency.
-
Thinning and mixing ratio shall be in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
-
The primer shall be applied as per manufacturer recommendations with correct thickness required.
-
All priming and filling shall be rubbed down to a smooth surface with fine abrasive paper and cleaned off all dust before application of first coat.
-
Material shall be evenly spread and applied smoothly without runs and sags, by skilled workers.
-
Care shall be taken to avoid brush marks, sags and other defects.
-
The coat interval, curing period and DFT of each coat shall be checked as per manufacturer requirements.

All coats of paint shall be allowed to dry before the subsequent coats.
-
Apply number of coats as per specification and manufacturer recommendation.

Painting shall be done as per approved RAL number.
-
Each coat shall be checked and released by QAQC personnel.
