Blue Ringed Octopus and Cone Shell

The blue ringed octopus is small, often only the size of a golf ball, and is found in coastal waters in various parts of the world, though it is most associated with Australian waters.   6. If the patient becomes unconscious, clear the airway and follow the standard basic life support approach, and seek urgent medical assistance.

Stonefish, Bullrout and Stingray Injuries

Stonefish and bullrout both carry sharp spines capable of injecting venom deep under the skin, causing intense pain, though severe poisoning effects are relatively uncommon. Stingrays carry a different kind of hazard, a powerful barbed spine on the tail capable of causing significant physical wounds in addition to venom effects.

Recognition

  • Severe pain at the site of the sting.
  • Swelling and grey or blue discolouration around the wound.
  • Possible open wounds, particularly from stingray barbs, sometimes with fragments left in the wound.
  • Irrational behaviour or panic can occur due to the intensity of the pain.

Management

  1. Place the stung hand or foot into water as hot as the patient can comfortably tolerate without being burned, since heat is well supported for relieving the pain of these particular stings.
  2. Manage airway, breathing and circulation using the standard basic life support approach as needed.
  3. Arrange transport to medical care, since embedded spine fragments and the wound itself often need proper medical attention.
  4. Do not use a pressure immobilisation bandage for these particular stings, since this is specific to blue ringed octopus and cone shell envenomation, not stonefish, bullrout or stingray injuries.

Antivenom is available for stonefish stings where the reaction is severe, which is another reason genuine medical assessment matters even once the immediate pain has been addressed with hot water.
